(

, "forests"). The groves of Palestine, inhabited by wild and even rapacious animals (2Ki_2:24, Jer_5:6; Jer_12:8, Amo_3:4, etc.), were, especially before the cultivation of the soil by the Israelites, not inconsiderable, but not adequate to supply timber, much less fuel. SEEWOOD. In the Mosaic law there is reference to forests and their employment (Deu_19:5), and conflagrations in them are occasionally noticed (Psa_83:15; Isa_9:17; comp. Jer_21:14, Jam_3:5). Several tracts of woodland are enumerated in the Bible (Reland, Palest. page 378 sq., Hamesveld, 1:436 sq.). SEE FOREST.
