(Heb. áֵּéú çִéַּéí , house of the living), a name given by modern Jews to a burial place — the dead being looked upon as living. The name was probably invented by the Pharisees as a protest against the infidel doctrine of the Sadducees that there is no resurrection, and as a standing declaration of their belief in the immortality of the soul and a general resurrection of the dead.
