The phrase “beyond Jordan” (
äִéִּøְãֵּï òֵáֶø

) frequently occurs in the Scriptures, and to ascertain its meaning we must, of course, attend to the situation of the writer (see Kuinol, Comment. in Joh_1:28). With Moses it usually signifies the country on the western side of the river, as he wrote upon its eastern bank (Gen_1:10-11; Deu_1:1; Deu_1:5; Deu_3:8; Deu_3:20; Deu_4:46); but with Joshua, after he had crossed the river, it means the reverse (Jos_5:1; Jos_12:7; Jos_22:7). In Mat_4:15, it means “by the side of the Jordan.” SEE ATAD.
