DAUGHTER ( èõãÜôçñ ).—The word ‘daughter’ is used in various sense in the Gospels: (1) in the literal sense, Mat_9:18; Mat_10:35, Mar_5:35; Mar_6:22; Mar_7:29, Luk_8:42; (2) as a term of kind address, Mat_9:22, Mar_5:34, Luk_8:48; (3) collectively for the inhabitants of a city, Mat_21:5, Joh_12:15 (cf. Zec_9:9); (4) as a term of address to the female inhabitants of a city, Luk_23:28; (5) in the Hebrew sense of descendant, Luk_1:5; Luk_13:16.

The diminutive èõãÜôñéïí is found twice in the Gospel of Mark (Mar_5:23; Mar_7:25). Like all diminutives, it is a term of endearment.
