This Chapter Verse Commentaries:
v. 42. Give to him that asketh thee; and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
To give and to lend are two duties of charity which Christ puts on a level, both guided by prudence and the interest of the neighbor, 2Th_3:10; Pro_20:4. Stewards of God's bounty will have to give an account at the last day, and their sentence may depend largely upon the manner in which they appreciated the trust of God. All such assistance rendered to the needy neighbor should be given cheerfully, without a thought of reward.
