13. This should be compared with 1Jn 3:24, to which it is closely parallel. There, as here, the gift of the Spirit is the proof of God’s abiding presence: but there this is connected with keeping His commandments; here it is connected with the special duty of brotherly love.

ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ δέδ. We receive of His Spirit. Of Christ alone was it said in the fullest sense that οὐκ ἐκ μέτρου is the Spirit given to Him (Joh 3:34). Christians are said sometimes τὸ Πνεῦμα λαβεῖν (Gal 3:2 : comp. 1Jn 4:6), sometimes ἐκ τοῦ Πνεύματος λαβεῖν, as here. Only the former is true of Christ. See on 1Jn 3:24 and 2Jn 1:4.
