17. οὐ κατὰ κύριον λαλῶ. He does this on his own responsibility and claims no inspiration for it. The expression seems to mean ‘in accordance with the character of the Lord.’ Comp. οὐ κατὰ Χριστόν (Col 2:8); κατὰ Χρ. Ἰησοῦν (Rom 15:5); κατὰ Θεόν (2Co 7:9; Eph 4:24); and especially μὴ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ταῦτα λαλῶ; (1Co 9:8). Here, as there, the use of λαλῶ is to be noted. It implies, more than λέγω does, that he has his readers before him and is talking to them (comp. 2Co 12:19; Rom 7:1). See Winer, p. 501.

ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ ὑποστάσει τῆς καυχήσεως. This applies to both himself and his opponents. Neque enim illi propositum erat se laudare, sed tantum illis se opponere, ut eos dejiceret. Transfert igitur in suam personam quod illorum erat proprium, ut Corinthiis aperiat oculos (Calvin). For ὑπόστασις see on 2Co 9:4 : in this confidence of glorying.
