1–6. These opening verses deal with a difficulty which had been growing at Corinth. He was so often obliged to speak of himself and his authority, that he laid himself open to the sneering reminder that “self-praise is no recommendation.” The outburst of praise in 2Co 2:14-17 is likely to provoke this sneer once more. So, before going on with his Apologia, he turns aside to deal with this. ‘Do not think that I am writing a testimonial for myself. I have no need of anything of the kind. You are my testimonial. Any ability which Apostles may have is not their own, but comes from God.’
