This Chapter Verse Commentaries:
14. τόν τε ἄνθρωπον. It has been asked on this verse: Why did the sight of the healed man so utterly confound the judges that they had not a word to say? We may see from what happened afterwards that there were men in the council not without the thought that God was really working through the Apostles. Gamaliel says (Act 5:39) ‘If this work be of God’; and if this feeling operated in him, the recognised head of the Jewish court, it is not unlikely that others were also silent with the consideration that ‘haply they might be fighting against God.’

Chrysostom says the miracle spake as forcibly as did the Apostles: οὐχ ἦττον δὲ τῆς τούτων φωνῆς ἠφίει φωνὴν τὸ θαῦμα καὶ τὸ σημεῖον. ὃ δὴ καὶ μάλιστα ἐνέφραξεν αὐτῶν τὰ στόματα.
