This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

25. εἶπον … πιστεύετε. The change of tense is significant: His declaration is past; their unbelief still continues. To a few, the woman at the well, the man born blind, and the Apostles, Jesus had explicitly declared Himself to be the Messiah; to all He had implicitly declared Himself by His works and teaching.

τὰ ἔργα. see on Joh 5:20; Joh 5:36 : all the details of His Messianic work. Ἐγώ is an emphatic answer to the preceding σύ (‘If Thou art the Christ’), and to the following ὑμεῖς: ταῦτα also is emphatic; ‘the works which I do … they … but ye believe not.’ For this retrospective use of οὗτος see on Joh 3:32.
