26. Ἐγώ εἰμι. It is the ordinary Greek affirmative (Luk 22:70). There is no reference to the Divine name ‘I AM,’ Exo 3:14; Deu 32:39. This open declaration of His Messiahship is startling when we remember Mat 16:20; Mat 17:9; Mar 8:30. But one reason for reserve on this subject, lest the people should ‘take Him by force to make Him a king’ (Joh 6:15), is entirely wanting here. There was no fear of the Samaritans making political capital out of Him. Moreover it was one thing for Christ to avow Himself when He saw that hearts were ready for it; quite another for disciples to make Him known promiscuously. Contrast Mat 26:63.
