This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

7. ὁ κόσμος. Unbelievers; the common use in S. John: in Joh 7:4 it meant all mankind (see on Joh 1:10). He takes up their word and gives it a meaning far deeper than theirs. The world cannot hate them because they are part of itself (Joh 15:19). Hence it is that they can always manifest themselves; they can always count upon a favourable reception. As in Joh 3:3; Joh 3:5, Joh 5:19, Joh 6:44; Joh 6:65, οὐ δύναται expresses a moral impossibility; comp. Joh 7:34; Joh 7:36, Joh 8:21; Joh 8:43, Joh 12:39, Joh 13:33; Joh 13:36, Joh 14:17, Joh 16:12. For μαρτυρῶ see on Joh 1:7.
