This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

24. ἀποθανεῖσθε. This is the emphatic word here, not ἐν τ. ἁμαρτ., as in Joh 8:21 The plural expresses the separate sins of each. “No reckoning made, but sent to your account with all your imperfections on your head.” But the sentence is not irreversible; it is pronounced conditionally, unless ye believe. Comp. Joh 1:12, Joh 3:15-18, Joh 6:40.

ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι. That I am, implying the self-existence of Divinity. Here and in Joh 8:24; Joh 8:28; Joh 8:58, Joh 13:19, the context supplies no predicate; elsewhere (Joh 4:26, Joh 9:9, Joh 18:5-6; Joh 18:8) it does. I AM is the great Name, which every Jew understood; Exo 3:14; Deu 32:39; Isa 43:10.
