53. μὴ σὺ μείζων. Exactly parallel to Joh 4:12. ‘Surely Thou, the mad Galilean, art not greater than our father Abraham, seeing that he died? and the prophets died.’ The anacoluthon, like their exaggeration, is very natural. The sentence should run καὶ τ. προφήτων οἵτινες ἀπέθανον. For ὅστις comp. 1Jn 1:2; Heb 10:35. For σεαυτὸν ποιεῖν comp. Joh 5:18, Joh 10:33, Joh 19:7; Joh 19:12; 1Jn 1:10 : it is a Johannean phrase, meaning to declare oneself to be such by word and deed.
