This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

7. καὶ οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τέκνον. This was regarded as a heavy misfortune, because it cut off all hope of the birth of the Messiah in that family. It was also regarded as often involving a moral reproach, and as being a punishment for sin. See Gen 11:30; Gen 18:11; Gen 30:1-23; Exo 23:26; Deu 7:14; Jdg 13:2-3; 1Sa 1:6; 1Sa 1:27; Isa 47:9.

καθότι. This word in the N. T. is used only by St Luk 19:9; Act 2:24. Classically it is better written καθ' ὅ τι.

προβεβηκότες ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις. A Hebraism for baîm bayamîm Gen 18:11, &c. The classical phrase would be τῇ ἡλικίᾳ or τὴν ἡλικίαν or τοῖς ἔτεσιν. A priest apparently might minister until any age, but Levites were partially superannuated at 50 (Num 3:1-39; Num 3:4; Num 8:25).
