27. γυναικῶν. Some of them may have come to offer the anodynes which were supposed to be demanded by the Rabbinic interpretation of Pro 31:6. This is the only other recorded incident of the procession to Calvary, and it is mentioned by St Luke alone. It is a sad fact that no man—even of His Apostles—seems to have come forward to support these His last hours.
ἐκόπτοντο … αὐτόν. ‘Were beating their breasts for Him.’ Comp. Luk 8:52, Luk 18:13.
