This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

8. ὃ ἔσχεν ἐποίησεν. She did what she could. This class. use of ἔχω is freq. in Lk. (Luk 7:42; Luk 12:4; Luk 14:14) and Acts (Act 4:14; Act 23:17-19, etc.). For the sense see on 2Co 8:12.

προέλαβεν μυρίσαι. She hath been beforehand in anointing. She anticipated the funeral rite. Jn tells us that myrrh and aloes, but not unguents, were placed round the Body, and Mk and Lk. say that women prepared to anoint Him, but that He had risen before they could do so. So Mary alone has this honour. Μυρίζω is classical, but occurs here only in Bibl. Grk. Professional embalmers were called ἐνταφιασταί, and ἐνταφιάζω = “embalm” (Gen 50:2). So also in papyri.
