This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

39. Τί θορυβεῖσθε; He stills this tumult, like that of the storm on the Lake, and that made by the demoniac (Mar 1:25, Mar 4:39); but here, as He has rational beings to deal with, He reasons with them first.

οὐκ ἀπέθανεν. Aor. as in Mar 5:35. The probable meaning is that Christ knew that He was about to recall her to life, and therefore He says καθεύδει of her, as He says κεκοίμηται of Lazarus (Joh 11:11). The Evangelists regard her as dead, Lk. expressly so. Hominibus mortua, Deo dormiebat (Bede). But it is possible that He knew that she was only in a trance.
