This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

28. χλαμύδα κοκκίνην. A soldier’s scarf, Lat. chlamys: it was generally worn by superior officers, but its use was not confined to them. This may have been a worn-out scarf belonging to Pilate; it is different from ἐσθῆτα λαμπράν, (Luk 23:11), which Herod’s soldiers put on Jesus. Scarlet was the proper colour for the military chlamys; cp. ‘coccum imperatoriis dicatum paludamentis.’ Plin. H. N. xxii. 10. (See Dict. of Ant.) St Mark has the less definite πορφύραν; St John ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν. Purpureus, however, is used by Latin writers to denote any bright colour.
