40. ὁ καταλύων κ.τ.λ. This is the mockery of the Jewish populace, who have caught up the charges brought against Jesus before the Sanhedrin. The taunts of the soldiers are named by St Luke alone: ‘If thou be the King of the Jews, save thyself’ (Mat 23:37).
