19. μαθητεÏσατε. Make disciples of. Cp. Act 14:21, μαθητεÏσαντες ἱκανοÏÏ‚, and see ch. Mat 13:52, Mat 27:57, where the same word is used. διδάσκοντες, Mat 28:20, = ‘instructing.’ ‘Make disciples of all the Gentiles πάντα Ï„á½° ἔθνη) by baptism and by instruction in all my commands to you’ (πάντα ὅσα á¼Î½ÎµÏ„ειλάμην).
εἰς τὸ ὄνομα. ‘Into the name.’ Jewish proselytes were baptized into the name of the Father; Jesus adds the name of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. In the instances of baptism recorded in the Act 2:38; Act 8:16; Act 10:48; Act 19:5, the name of Jesus Christ (or the Lord Jesus) alone occurs in the baptismal formula, but the promise of the Holy Ghost is given (Act 2:38), or the gift of the Holy Ghost follows the rite (Act 8:17, Act 19:6), or precedes it (Act 10:44; Act 10:47).
