This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Mar_15:40-41

40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. 41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Mar_15:40 "There were also some women looking on from a distance" The apostolic group was ministered to both financially and physically by several women (i.e., cooking, washing, etc., cf. Mar_15:41; Mat_27:55; Luk_8:3).

"Mary Magdalene" Magdala was a small city on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, three miles north of Tiberias. Mary followed Jesus from Galilee after He had delivered her from several demons (cf. Luk_8:2). She has unfairly been labeled as a prostitute but there is no NT evidence of this. See Special Topic at Mar_16:1.

"Mary, the mother of James the Less and Joses" In Mat_27:56 she is called "the mother of James and Joseph." In Mat_28:1 she is called "the other Mary." The real question is, to whom was she married? In Joh_19:25 possibly she was married to Clopas, yet her son James, was said to be the "son of Alphaeus" (cf. Mat_10:3; Mar_3:18; Luk_6:15). See Special Topic at Mar_16:1.

"Salome" This was the mother of James and John, who were part of the inner circle of Jesus' disciples, and the wife of Zebedee (cf. Mat_27:56; Mar_15:40; Mar_16:1-2). See Special Topic: The Women Who Followed Jesus at Mar_16:1.
