This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Mat_26:55-56

55At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Mat_26:55 Jesus brings into clear light the plotting of the religious leaders (cf. Mat_12:14; Joh_11:53). They were seeking an opportunity to arrest Him away from the crowds of pilgrims and followers (cf. Mat_26:4; Luk_22:2).

NASB, NKJV       "robber"

NJB      "brigand"

The term denotes a violent, lawless person (cf. Luk_10:30). It was later used in Josephus for an insurrectionist, like Barabbas (cf. Mat_27:16-17).
