NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Mat_5:9

9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."

Mat_5:9 "peacemakers" This compound word appears only here. It refers to reconciliation between God and humanity, which results in peace between persons. However, this is not a peace at any price, but peace through repentance and faith (cf. Mar_1:15; Act_3:16; Act_3:19; Act_20:21; Rom_5:1). God has not changed, humanity has (i.e., Genesis 3; Rom_3:9-19; Gal_3:22), but in Christ the original mindset has been restored.

"sons of God" In the OT this phrase usually referred to angels. It is a Hebrew idiom reflecting God's character. The goal of Christianity is Christlikeness (cf. Rom_8:28-29; Gal_4:19), which is the restoration of the image of God in mankind lost in the Fall of Genesis 3. See Special Topic at Mat_27:54.
