12The fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way.
Rev_8:12 Darkness has always been a sign of God's judgment (cf. Exo_10:21; Isa_13:10; Isa_34:4; Isa_50:3; Eze_32:7-8; Joe_2:2; Joe_2:10; Joe_2:31; Joe_3:15; Amo_5:18; Mar_13:24). The heavenly bodies were often worshiped as spiritual powers. God created them (cf. Gen_1:14-19; Isa_40:26); named them (cf. Psa_147:4; Isa_40:26); controls them (cf. Isa_48:13); and they praise Him (cf. Psa_148:3).
