Foreword

When Dr. Klass Schilder’s ‘Lenten trilogy’ first made its appearance in English nearly forty years ago, it was immediately welcomed by evangelicals of all denominations as a work of outstanding merit. In fact, it was found to be without equal in modern literature.

In treating the events which led up to the crucifixion, Schilder brings the reader into touch with the spiritual and temporal forces which converged during the Passion Week. He is careful to keep Christ central, and blends in a masterful way this culmination of our Lord’s earthly life with historical facts and psychological realities. With these dimensions so beautifully intertwined, the offices of Christ as Prophet, Priest, and King are seen in the light of God’s goodness to Israel and gracious provision for man’s redemption.

These volumes, treating as they do Christ’s sufferings, trial, and crucifixion, should not be confined to a pastor’s bookshelf. Preachers, of course, should have them and read them repeatedly. However, what Klaas Schilder has said can be read and enjoyed by laypeople as well. This writer hopes that Dr. Schilder’s books will find their way into many Christian homes and bring blessing and enrichment to those who will take the time to master their teaching.
