Foreword

The first volume of Dr. Schilder’s work on the suffering of our Lord met with an unusually favorable reception from every section of the American Protestant press. In the Lutheran Standard, we read: “It is a thorough-going exposition of pertinent Scripture passages, a determined effort to penetrate beneath the form of words and to establish in the believing heart the glory of our redemption in Christ and His eternal sufficiency for us in all things.” Other Lutheran papers agreed.

The Presbyterian Guardian commented, “This treatment of the Passion probably never has been surpassed in its combination of acute reflection upon the sacred text and fresh, stimulating form of expression.” The Christian Observer called the book “an outstanding contribution to the Christian literature of the day.”

“It is hard to write of this volume in measured terms,” wrote the Evangelical Christian; “in each chapter will be found spiritual treasures that will bless, inform and delight the mind.” “A great book” agreed the Sunday School Times, and King’s Business commented, “The Scriptural penetration of this unusual mind and spirit will challenge the most informed student of the Word, and nourish the humble believer.”

Summing it all up, the London Service stated: “This book is a masterpiece, not merely because of the considerable literary ability displayed, nor even because of the reverent, devotional spirit manifested, but as the publisher states, ‘distinctive of the book are the richly suggestive flashes of exegetical insight, and the welcome specific detail brought to bear upon the study in the effort to present the sublimely organic unity of the Saviour’s awful passion.’ This is easily the finest book on the subject that we have yet seen.”

We trust that this second volume, CHRIST ON TRIAL, will be welcomed with equal heartiness by the English speaking world. These chapters cover our Lord’s Passion from Gethsemane till He was condemned to be crucified. Mr. Henry Zylstra, who translated the first volume, continued his work with this second book. The publishers have not spared any effort to make the exterior of the volume as attractive as its contents.
