International Standard Bible Encyclopedia: Baltasar Subjects in this Topic: bal-tā´sar (ΒαλτασαÌÏ, BaltasaÌr; the King James Version Balthasar): (1) The Greek of Hebrew, בּלטש××צר, beÌ„ltÌ£esha'ccar, or בּלט×ש×צּר, beÌ„ltÌ£e'shaccar, perhaps corresponding to ר, BalaÌ‚tÌ£-sÌŒar-usÌ£ur, “protect the life of the king,†the Babylonian cognomen of Daniel. Compare Belteshazzar (; ; , et al.). (2) Baltasar is also the Greek of the Hebrew בּלש××צּר, beÌ„lsha'ccar, or בּל×ש×צּר, beÌ„l'shaccar, the name of the last king of Babylon (corresponding to the Babylonian BeÌ‚l-sÌŒar-usÌ£ur; Schrader, Die Keilinschriften und das Alte Testament, III, 396; Syriac Blitshazzar; Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390-405 ad) Baltassar).
