brooz, broozd: The noun occurs in the King James Version, “bruises and putrifying sores,†as the translation of חבּוּרה, hÌ£abbarahÌŒ. The verb translations a number of Hebrew words, the principal ones being (1) ש×וּף, shuÌ„ph ( (twice)); (2) דּקק, daÌ„kÌ£akÌ£ ( (twice) (the American Standard Revised Version “ground,†“and though the wheel of his cart and his horses scatter it, he doth not grind it†for the King James Version “nor break it with the wheels of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemenâ€)); (3) דּכ×, daÌ„khaÌ„', in the classical passage, , “He was bruised for our iniquities,†, “Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise himâ€; (4) רצץ, racac, “A bruised reed shall he not break,†(quoted in ).
In the New Testament bruise is the translation of σπαÏαÌσσω, sparaÌssoÌ„, “to rend†(the American Standard Revised Version “bruising him sorelyâ€) ; of συντÏιÌβω, suntrıÌboÌ„, “to break to pieces†(); “shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly†(); of θÏαυÌω, thrauÌoÌ„ in in the quotation from , “to set at liberty them that are bruised†(WH omits the verse).
