kon-suÌ„m´ (×כל( ´muÌ„, 'aÌ„khal, כּלה, kaÌ„laÌ„h, תּמ×, taÌ„mam; ἀναλιÌσκω, analıÌskoÌ„): In Old Testament 'aÌ„khal (“to eat,†“devourâ€) occurs very frequently, and is translated “consumed†(; ; , etc.); kaÌ„laÌ„h (“to finishâ€) is also frequently translated “consume,†“consumed†(; ; , etc.); taÌ„mam, “to be perfect,†“finished†(; ; , etc.). There are many other words translated “consume†and “consumed,†e.g. sÌ£uÌ„ph, “to end†(; Dan 1:44; , ); baÌ„laÌ„h, “to fade,†“wear away†(; ); gaÌ„zal, implying violence (); sÌ£aÌ„phaÌ„h, “to end†(, ; , etc.); ‛aÌ„sheÌ„sh, “to be old†(; , the King James Version); maÌ„kÌ£akÌ£, “to become completed†(; bis); ‛aÌ„saÌ„h kaÌ„laÌ„h is rendered “utterly consume†(); analiskoÌ„, “to use up,†occurs in ; ; (the King James Version); dapanaÌoÌ„, “to spend,†is translated “consume†in (the Revised Version (British and American) “spendâ€); katanalıÌskoÌ„, “to consume utterly,†occurs only in ; “for our God is a consuming fire.â€
In the Revised Version (British and American) “devour,†“devoured†are several times substituted for “consume,†“consumed,†e.g. ; ; ; “boil well†(); for “be consumed with dying†(), “perish all of usâ€; “consume†is substituted for “corrupt†in ; “my spirit is consumed,†for “my breath is corrupt†(); instead of “the flame consumeth the chaff†() we have “as the dry grass sinketh down in the flameâ€; and for “whom the Lord shall consume†(), the Revised Version (British and American) reads (after a different text) “whom the Lord Jesus shall slay,†“consume†in the American Revised Version, margin.
