Various words are translated “cry,†“crying,†etc., the chief of which are those above given; zā‛aḳ and cā‛aḳ denote especially a cry for help, from pain or distress, and are frequently used for crying to God, e.g. (zā‛aḳ, ; , ; ; , ; ); (cā‛aḳ, ; ; ; ; ; ); ḳārā' (a mimetic word) has the widest signification, but is often used of appealing to God (frequently translated “call,†“called,†etc., , , ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; , etc.); shāwa‛, “to cry aloud†(; , ; , ; ; ; , etc.); rinnāh, “a shouting,†whether for joy or grief (; ; ; ; ; ; the Revised Version (British and American) “rejoicing,†etc.). Other Hebrew words are 'ānaḳ “to groan†(; the King James Version; the King James Version); hāmāh, “to make a noise†( the King James Version); rūa‛, “to shout†( the King James Version; ; , etc.); rānan, “to cry aloud†(; ); shōa‛, “crying†(); teshu'ōth, “crying,†“noise†( the King James Version).
In the New Testament we have boaoÌ„, “to cry,†“shout†(; ; ; , etc.); krazoÌ„ (mimetic, the hoarse cry of the raven), “to cry out†(; ; ; ; ; ; ; , etc.); phoÌ„neoÌ„, “to give forth the voice,†“sound†(; ; ; ; the King James Version); anaboaÌoÌ„, “to cry out†(; ); aphıÌeÌ„mi, “to let go,†“to send away†( the King James Version); epiboaÌoÌ„, “to cry about†(anything) (Acts, ); epiphoÌ„neÌoÌ„, “to give forth the voice upon†( the King James Version); kraugaÌzoÌ„, “to make a cry, or outcry, or clamor†(; ; ; ; , ; ); anakraÌzoÌ„, “to cry out†(; , etc.); kraugeÌ„Ì, “a crying out†(; the King James Version; ; ).
For “cry†the Revised Version (British and American) has “sound†(); “cry because of these things†( the English Revised Version); “cry out†(; ); “call†(; ; ); “be blind†(); “groan†(); “pant†(); “cry aloud†(); “clamor†().
