peÌ„Ì-tish´un: Used in English Versions of the Bible only as a noun, usually as representing the Hebrew ש××לה, she'eÌ„laÌ„h (, מש××לה, mish'aÌ„laÌ„h), from the common verb ש××ל, shaÌ„'al, “to ask.†The noun, consequently, has no technical meaning, and may be used indifferently in the active () or passive () sense, or for a petition addressed to either God () or man (), while in ; ; , it is rendered simply “request.†Otherwise “petition†represents the Aramaic בּעוּ, bā‛uÌ„ (, ), the Greek αἰÌτημα, aıÌteÌ„ma (), and δεÌησις, deÌeÌ„sis (1 Macc 7:37, the Revised Version (British and American) “supplicationâ€), and the Latin oratio (2 Esdras 8:24).
