International Standard Bible Encyclopedia: Vehement; Vehemently Subjects in this Topic: vē´heÌ„Ì-ment, vē´heÌ„Ì-ment-li (חריש××™, hÌ£ărı̄shı̄; ἐπιποÌθησις, epipoÌtheÌ„sis): “Vehement†(from Latin vehere, “to carry,†or ve, “out of,†and mens, “mindâ€), carried away by the mind or force of passion, occurs twice in the Old Testament (, the King James Version “a most vehement flame†(jealousy)) as the translation of shalhebheth-yaÌ„h, “the flame of Yah,†which perhaps means lightning (the Revised Version (British and American) “a very flame of Yahweh,†margin “a most vehement flame, Hebrew: Yahâ€); and as the translation of the King James Version hÌ£ărı̄shı̄, “silent,†“still,†hence “sultry†(, the King James Version “a vehement east wind,†the Revised Version (British and American) “sultryâ€). In the New Testament, “vehement desire†is (the King James Version) the translation of epipotheÌ„sis, “earnest desire†(, the Revised Version (British and American) “longingâ€). “Vehemently†is the translation of deinoÌ„Ìs, “greatly†(); of ek perissouÌ or ekperissoÌ„Ìs, “beyond measure†(, “He spake exceeding vehementlyâ€); of eutoÌnoÌ„s, “intensely†(); and in the King James Version of prosrheÌ„Ìgnumi, “to break†or “dash upon†(, , the Revised Version (British and American) “breakâ€).
