Title. Maschil = Instruction. The twelfth of thirteen so named (the thirteenth being Psalm 142). See note on Psalm 32, and App-65.
Ethan. Mentioned with Heman (Psalm 88). A Merarite (1Ch_6:44; 1Ch_15:17). He seems to have another name, "Jeduthun" (1Ch_25:1, 1Ch_25:3, 1Ch_25:6; 1Ch_16:41, 1Ch_16:42). The only Psalm ascribed to Ethan. See note on Psa_89:30. Ezrahite. See note on Psalm 88, Title. Compre the case of Elkanah 1Sa_1:1).
mercies = lovingkindnesses. Plural of majesty = the great lovingkindness.

faithfulness = truth. Hebrew. 'emunah. Seven times reiterated in this Psalm: verses: Psa_89:1, Psa_89:2, Psa_89:5, Psa_1:8, Psa_1:24, Psa_1:33, Psa_1:49 ("in thy truth").
